Seven-year-old Octaveia “Tavey” Mindrum rarely gets anything worse than the occasional cold or stomach bug, her parents said, so when she developed a slight cough last week, nobody was particularly alarmed.

“She had a slight cough and the sniffles a couple days before, but it was nothing to be concerned about,” said her father, Kristopher Mindrum.
